The Hotel Scala has its origins in the ancient coach station/inn Gasthof “an der Stiegen” or “an der Hilben” the name mentioning the pond that was located in front of the Hotel a century ago. The Hotel has been transformed dramatically in 1898 when the Liberty-style facade was build and the whole complex enlarged in order to accommodate the ever more growing stream of German tourists flocking to Bolzano from November to April for recreation. The period of fascism brought a dramatic change to Bolzano by adding heavy industry complexes, putting an end to the city’s good climate and air. That is why the dependence, destroyed by bombs during the second world war has never been rebuilt. It was only in 1994 when ten newly built “Superior” rooms were build on the garden wing, offering a nice view on the surroundings. Perhaps the most extensive renovation, took place in 2008 in the south wing, 33 out-dated “Standard” rooms were stripped out and replaced with 25 larger “Comfort” rooms, mostly doubles. Many other rooms benefited from the upgrading works as well, receiving air condition.
